A Comprehensive Summary of Electromagnetic Flowmeter Application Scenarios

2025-10-16
Electromagnetic Flowmeters (EMF for short) are a new type of flow measurement instrument that developed rapidly in the 1950s and 1960s with the advancement of electronic technology. As the saying goes, "where there is demand, there is supply". Up to now, there have been various types of electromagnetic flowmeters on the market, with a wide range of options.
There are many classification methods for electromagnetic flowmeters, and each category includes numerous types. They can be classified based on output signal connection and excitation (or power supply) wiring systems, assembly methods of sensors and converters, connection methods between flow sensors and pipelines, whether flow sensor electrodes are in contact with the measured liquid, flow sensor structures, and application purposes, etc.
Next, let's take a look at the application fields of electromagnetic flowmeters classified by their uses!

01 General-Purpose Electromagnetic Flowmeters

They are general electromagnetic flowmeters used in industrial fields such as metallurgy, petrochemicals, papermaking, textiles, water supply and drainage, sewage treatment, as well as pharmaceuticals, food, biology, and fine chemicals. They are the main type of electromagnetic flowmeters. There is a specific range requirement for the conductivity of the measured medium, and generally, it cannot exceed the upper and lower limits of this range.

02 Explosion-Proof Electromagnetic Flowmeters

They are used in places with explosive atmospheres. Due to the large energy of the excitation current, flameproof types are still the main ones at present. In recent years, intrinsic safety types (i.e., safety spark-type electromagnetic flowmeters) have emerged abroad. Their excitation power has been significantly reduced, so they can be made into an integrated type and fully installed in hazardous areas for operation.

03 Sanitary Electromagnetic Flowmeters

They are electromagnetic flowmeters used in industries such as pharmaceuticals, food, and biochemistry. They must meet relevant sanitary requirements in terms of regular sterilization, easy disassembly and cleaning, etc.

04 Water-Resistant Electromagnetic Flowmeters

They are sensors installed underground and can withstand short-term water immersion.

05 Submersible Electromagnetic Flowmeters

They are used to measure the flow rate of free-flowing liquids in open channels or non-full closed channels. The sensor is located at the lower part of the open channel closure baffle and works immersed in water for a long time. Their structure and application are different from those of general electromagnetic flowmeters.

06 Insertion-Type Electromagnetic Flowmeters

They are electromagnetic flow sensors used for large-diameter pipelines. The sensor is radially inserted through an opening in the pipeline to measure the local flow velocity and calculate the flow rate. They have lower accuracy but are cheaper, making them suitable for control systems.
