How Does the Fork Detect Liquid?-100 Questions About Tuning Fork Level Switches

13. How Does the Fork Detect Liquid?

The vibrating fork is kept vibrating at its natural resonant frequency by an internal piezoelectric element when it is in air.

When liquid rises and submerges the fork prongs, the liquid creates damping force on the fork. This reduces the vibration amplitude and changes the resonant frequency. The built-in electronic circuit continuously monitors the vibration state. Once it detects this frequency/amplitude shift, the circuit activates and outputs a switch signal, indicating that liquid has reached the fork position.

When the liquid level drops below the fork, the liquid damping disappears. The fork returns to its original vibration frequency. The

electronics reset the switch signal to show no liquid at the detection point.
